In this weather nothing is better than a cold icy gola… while enjoying my gola I saw this man selling chana aka chana jor garam, which made me thinking why would someone have it in this hot weather… But watching people purchase it and enjoying it made me very curious to why are people enjoying, in this weather…

So I went to the stall and asked him for 10 Rs cone… He nodded and made a cone out of a magazine paper took some boiled chana, boiled potatoes, added chopped onions, tomatoes, chilies, salt, mango powder (amchoor), lemon juice and coriander and shook it up and down to mix up the ingredients… Waiting for the chana made me drool just imagining how it would taste… Literally my mouth is watering just writing about it right now…

For those who don’t know what masala chana aka chana jor garam is which is impossible, it’s boiled chickpeas, with some boiled potatoes, chopped onions, tomatoes, chilies, coriander, mango powder, and lemon juice… This street food is very popular in Mumbai and you will find at least one chana wala in every area and mostly near the beaches…

He gave it to me the cone with a hard paper in square shape to use it as a spoon… Having the first bite I exactly knew why people liked it in spite of the heat… It was quite refreshing, crunchy and tangy tasting… It was a explosion of so many flavours in your mouth that you just want more and more… I also realised that hot or cold masala chana tastes good anyway…

#Below is a quick recipe of masala chana…

Serves: 2-3

Preparation time: 15mins

Ingredients:

  • Boiled green chana/black chana: 1 Cup
  • Boiled potato: 1
  • Tomato chopped: 1
  • Onion chopped: 2
  • Grated raw mango (optional): 1 tbsp
  • Green chili finely cut: 1 Small
  • Chat masala: 1 tsp
  • Amchur (optional): ½ tsp
  • Roasted cumin powder: ½ tsp
  • Chili powder (optional): ½ tsp
  • Lime juice: 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves: 2-3 stands
  • Salt: as per taste

Method:

Step 1: Cook chana in pressure cooker till soft.
Step 2: Mix all the ingredients in the same pressure cooker when the chana is hot. Squeeze in lemon juice, garnish with fresh coriander and serve.

Note: You can pre soak the chana overnight so it takes less time to boil.
